Call for Pitches: Power and Energy

Energy is everywhere. It plays a pivotal role in modern life. But climate change, geopolitics, and myriad technological developments are all affecting how we generate, transfer, and consume power. There are plenty of reasons to be concerned, and plenty of reasons to be excited, too.

In February 2016, I’ll be curating a month-long series of articles on the future of energy and power here at How We Get To Next. And I’d like your help. I want to hear about the energy stories that aren’t being told. Here are a few questions you might want to use as a jumping-off point:

  • How will the global balance of power change if fossil fuels lose their importance?
  • Do you know where your electricity comes from?
  • What’s actually going on with nuclear fusion?
  • Which future energy technologies are the closest to being commercialized?
  • Can solar alone meet the world’s energy demands?
  • Why isn't nuclear power getting safer?
  • What’s the future of the global power grid?
  • If you had to use 50 percent less power, what would you give up?
  • How do you set up a community energy scheme?
  • What’s the most effective way to power the developing world?
  • Who are the biggest and smallest power users?
  • What are some unexpected ways we’ll save energy in the coming decades?
  • Can we really shake our fossil fuels habit?
  • Is the future battery-powered?
  • How will we electrify the first colonies on other planets?

We’re also interested in more unusual article formats like interactive storytelling and counter-factual narratives. How will future generations look back at the way we generate and use power now? What will have changed? Which of our methods that seem so normal now will look strange or even horrifying to our descendants?

If you think you've got a good answer to any of the above, or you have another energy-related story that you’d love to tell, drop me an email and we’ll talk. The address you’ll need is duncan@howwegettonext.com.

I can’t wait to hear from you.
